Project Overview
Danby Interiors was approached by a client seeking to enhance their kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The existing space featured an irregular shape with three closely situated doorways and a hatchway leading to the dining room, which disrupted the flow between the kitchen and adjacent areas.
Additionally, the kitchen lacked accessible storage and adequate work surfaces. The client’s primary objectives were to improve spatial flow, strengthen the connection with the dining area, and optimise storage and work surfaces.

Kitchen Design Challenges
Irregular Room Shape: The kitchen’s unconventional layout, with multiple doorways and a hatchway, hindered efficient movement and design flexibility.
Limited Storage and Work Surfaces: The existing kitchen lacked adequate accessible storage and sufficient countertop space for meal preparation.
Disjointed Flow Between Areas: The proximity of doorways and the partial separation from the dining room disrupted the cohesion between the kitchen and dining spaces.
Kitchen Design Solutions
Reconfiguring Access Points: By closing off the doorway leading to the extended hall and fully opening the hatchway to the dining room, we created a coherent connection between the kitchen, dining area, and hallway. This modification also introduced a right-angle corner, enhancing design possibilities.
Optimising Layout Options: We presented three design concepts:
- A peninsula layout
- An island layout
- A layout following the kitchen’s outer walls
The client selected the third option, valuing the increased floor space for social gatherings and the potential to add an island in the future.
Enhancing Storage Solutions: We incorporated a tall storage bank featuring:
- A 30cm-wide shelved larder
- A 60cm-wide swing-out larder unit
- A fridge-freezer positioned near the new dining room opening for convenient access during cooking and entertaining
Improving Work Surface Continuity: The countertops were designed to flow unbroken around the new corner, providing a spacious area for the hob and ample landing space adjacent to the ovens, thereby streamlining cooking activities.
Unifying Flooring: Installing consistent flooring throughout the kitchen and dining room visually connected the spaces, enhancing the overall flow and cohesion.
